Area and perimeter are taught together at KS2, which is exactly why children (and plenty of parents) often mix them up โ they describe genuinely different things about the same shape.
Perimeter: the distance around the outside
Add up the length of every side. For a rectangle 5cm by 3cm: 5+3+5+3 = 16cm perimeter. Think of it as the length of fence needed to go all the way around a garden.
Area: the space inside
For a rectangle: length x width. Same rectangle: 5 x 3 = 15cmยฒ. Think of it as how much carpet would be needed to cover the floor of a room that shape.
Why the units are different โ and why it matters
Perimeter is measured in plain units (cm, m) because it's a length. Area is measured in square units (cmยฒ, mยฒ) because it's measuring a two-dimensional space. This distinction is genuinely important and specifically checked in KS2 maths โ a child who writes "15cm" instead of "15cmยฒ" for an area answer will typically lose marks, even with the correct number.
A memorable way to keep them separate
Perimeter = the "P" is for the path you'd walk around the edge. Area = think "a rug" covering the inside space. Any simple, sticky mental image that distinguishes "around the edge" from "the space inside" tends to prevent the two getting muddled.
Beyond simple rectangles
Upper KS2 extends this to compound shapes (an L-shape made of two rectangles) and triangles (area = half of base x height). The core distinction โ perimeter measures distance around, area measures space inside โ stays exactly the same, just applied to more complex shapes.
