Most well-known pocket money apps are built around chores — tidying a room, feeding a pet, unloading a dishwasher. For a lot of families this works well. But if your child simply refuses chores outright — turning every attempt into an argument — a chore-based app doesn't fix the underlying problem, it just digitises the same daily conflict.
Why chore-based systems sometimes fail
Chores require a child to be willing to do a specific physical task on a specific timeline, often something they find boring or pointless. For children who are already prone to refusal or conflict around demands — including many children with ADHD or a pathological demand avoidance (PDA) profile — chores framed as a rigid checklist can become a daily battleground regardless of the reward attached.
A different lever: reward something they're already required to do anyway
Rather than adding a new task (chores) on top of an already resistant child, some families find more success attaching pocket money to something the child is already expected to do regardless — like daily reading, spelling or maths practice, which is happening (or needs to happen) either way, homework or not.
This doesn't remove conflict entirely, but it avoids introducing an entirely new battleground on top of existing ones — you're adding motivation to an existing expectation rather than creating a brand new point of resistance.
What to look for instead of a chore-tracking app
- A system that rewards learning practice directly, with no separate chore-completion step required
- Immediate, automatic tracking — no parent needing to verify and tick off a chore was actually done properly, which is often itself a source of conflict
- A visible running total the child can see grow in real time, keeping the reward loop tight and motivating
Chores can come later, separately
This isn't necessarily a permanent alternative to chores — many families reintroduce them gradually, separately, once daily conflict overall has eased. But if chores are currently the main battleground, removing them from the pocket money equation for now — and rewarding something already happening instead — often reduces overall household conflict rather than adding another version of it.
