How Long Should Year 4 Spelling Homework Actually Take?

If it's eating your whole evening, something's off โ€” a genuine time benchmark, and what to do if it's taking too long.

If Year 4 spelling homework is regularly consuming 45 minutes to an hour of nightly conflict, that's a genuine sign something about the approach โ€” not necessarily your child's ability โ€” needs adjusting.

A reasonable time benchmark

Genuinely effective Year 4 spelling practice, done consistently across the week using short daily sessions, should realistically take 5-10 minutes per day โ€” roughly 30-50 minutes total across a full week, not one long weekend session. If a single sitting is regularly running 30+ minutes, the format is very likely the problem, not the content itself.

Why long sessions usually backfire

Sustained focus genuinely has limits, particularly for this age group. Pushing well past a child's natural concentration span doesn't add proportionate learning โ€” it mostly adds fatigue-driven mistakes and resentment, actually making the whole exercise less effective per minute than a shorter session would be.

If it's regularly taking too long, what to check first

What a well-structured version looks like

Two or three words a day, tested actively (not just copied), spread across the week, with a full-list recap the day before the test โ€” this genuinely takes less total time than one long weekend cram, while producing better, more lasting recall.

When it's worth raising with the school

If homework is consistently taking far longer than seems reasonable despite trying a better structure, it's worth asking the teacher directly how long they'd expect it to take โ€” sometimes the list itself is simply pitched too high for where a specific child currently is.
