B/d confusion is one of the most common early literacy worries parents raise, and in the vast majority of cases, it's completely normal โ not an early sign of dyslexia, as many parents fear.
Why b/d confusion happens
B and d are mirror images of each other, and young children's brains haven't yet fully developed the specific skill of reliably distinguishing left-right mirrored shapes โ a skill called mirror invariance, which is genuinely still developing throughout most of KS1.
What's genuinely normal, by age
Occasional b/d mix-ups are entirely typical through Reception and Year 1, and even fairly common into Year 2. It's really only worth closer attention if it persists significantly beyond age 7-8, alongside other letter or number reversals, or alongside broader reading and spelling difficulty.
Simple tricks that genuinely help
- The "bed" trick: draw a simple bed shape using a lowercase b and d โ b is the headboard on the left, d is the footboard on the right โ a visual anchor many children find genuinely sticky.
- Fist trick: make fists with both hands, thumbs up โ the left hand naturally forms a "b" shape, the right forms a "d," giving a quick physical reference point.
- Consistent, patient correction rather than frustration โ since this is developmental, not a knowledge gap, repeated calm correction over time works better than drilling.
When it's worth mentioning to the school
If reversal continues consistently well past age 7-8, or comes alongside other reading or spelling struggles, it's worth a brief mention to the class teacher โ not because it's necessarily a problem, but because it's useful additional information for anyone monitoring broader literacy development.
The reassuring bottom line
For the overwhelming majority of children, b/d confusion resolves naturally with time and normal reading practice, with no lasting significance at all โ it's one of the most over-worried-about, least concerning issues in early literacy.
