Parents Evening: Genuinely Useful Questions to Ask

Parents evening slots are typically five to ten minutes — genuinely too short to waste on vague questions that only get vague answers. Specific questions get specific, useful information.

Instead of "how's he doing?" — try these

• "Compared to where you'd expect at this point in the year, is he on track, ahead, or behind — and in which specific areas?"
• "What's one thing I could genuinely help with at home that would make the biggest difference right now?"
• "Is there a specific topic or skill he's currently finding hardest?"
• "How does he seem socially and emotionally in class — settled, anxious, confident?"

Questions specifically about academic progress

• "What reading band / maths group is she currently in, and what would move her up?"
• "Are there any specific gaps from earlier in the year that are still showing up?"
• "How does her writing compare to what's expected for this point in the year?"

Questions worth asking if you have a specific concern

• "I've noticed [specific behaviour] at home — do you see anything similar in class?"
• "Is this something you'd want to keep an eye on, or is it already a genuine concern worth acting on now?"
• "What would the next step be if this continues?"

Questions about wellbeing and friendships

• "Does she seem to have settled, secure friendships in class?"
• "Is there anything about her confidence or participation you've noticed, positive or otherwise?"

Making the most of a short slot

Writing down two or three specific priority questions beforehand — rather than trying to cover everything — genuinely gets more useful information in a short slot than an open-ended conversation that runs out of time before reaching what actually matters most to you.

What to do with the answers afterward

If a genuine concern comes up, it's worth following up in writing afterward (a brief email) to confirm what was discussed and agree any next steps — this creates a clear record and shows the school the concern is being taken seriously beyond the conversation itself.
