Phonics Screening Check 2026 โ€” Pass Mark & What Happens Next

When it happens, what the pass mark actually means, and what to do if your child doesn't reach it first time.

The Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment every Year 1 child in England takes, typically in the second week of June. It causes a fair amount of parental anxiety each spring โ€” largely because it's often misunderstood. Here's what it actually involves and what the outcome genuinely means.

What the check actually is

It's a one-to-one reading check of 40 words, done individually with a teacher โ€” not a written test, not timed pressure, and not something children revise for in the way older children prepare for SATs. Half the words are real words; half are deliberately made-up "pseudo-words" (like "spron" or "vap"), specifically designed to test whether a child can decode using phonics rules rather than simply recognising familiar words by sight.

The pass mark

The threshold is set each year by the Department for Education and typically sits around 32 out of 40, though it can shift slightly year to year. It's worth knowing this is a national benchmark, not a fine-grained measure โ€” a child scoring just below it isn't meaningfully "behind" in any dramatic sense; they're simply flagged for a bit more phonics support.

What happens if a child doesn't meet the threshold

Nothing dramatic, despite how it can feel. Children who don't reach the mark in Year 1 automatically retake the check in Year 2, alongside continued phonics teaching at school in the meantime. It is not a pass/fail exam with lasting consequences โ€” it's a screening tool designed specifically to catch children who need extra phonics support early, while there's still plenty of time to help.

How to help at home, without turning it into test prep

The bigger picture

The Phonics Screening Check is one data point in a long journey, not a verdict. Whatever the outcome, consistent, low-pressure phonics and reading practice at home remains the thing that helps most โ€” before, during, and long after check week.
