Place Value Explained Simply for Parents

A genuinely simple breakdown of the concept that underpins almost all of primary school maths.

Place value is arguably the single most important concept in primary maths โ€” nearly everything else (addition, subtraction, rounding, decimals) depends on genuinely understanding it, yet it's rarely explained clearly to parents trying to help.

The core idea

The position of a digit in a number determines its value, not just the digit itself. In 352, the 3 isn't just "three" โ€” it's three hundreds (300), because of its position. The 5 is five tens (50), and the 2 is two units (2).

Why the same digit means different things

In 352, the "3" is worth 300. In 235, the "3" is worth 30. Same digit, completely different value, purely because of its position โ€” genuinely worth demonstrating explicitly, as it's the exact insight that unlocks the whole concept.

Base-10 blocks: the most effective physical tool

Schools commonly use physical base-10 blocks โ€” single unit cubes, rods of 10, flat squares of 100 โ€” to make place value tangible. Building the number 352 physically (3 hundred-flats, 5 ten-rods, 2 unit-cubes) makes the abstract concept concrete in a way that just looking at digits on paper often doesn't.

Why place value matters for everything else

Column addition and subtraction only work correctly because digits are aligned by place value. Rounding depends on identifying the correct place value column. Decimals extend the same system past the units column into tenths and hundredths. A genuinely shaky grasp of place value tends to quietly undermine performance across several other maths topics at once.

A simple way to check understanding at home

Write a number and ask "what is the value of this digit?" pointing to different digits in turn โ€” not "what is this digit" (which just tests reading numbers) but specifically "what is it worth" in that position. This single question reveals genuine understanding far more reliably than most other quick checks.
