Year 2 marks the end of Key Stage 1 โ the point where children are formally assessed against the full KS1 curriculum, though these assessments now run more quietly and informally in many schools than the higher-profile KS2 SATs.
Reading
Reading books confidently at an age-appropriate level, understanding what's been read well enough to answer questions about it, using phonics as the first strategy for unfamiliar words, and beginning to read some longer words with confidence.
Writing
Writing several connected sentences on a topic, using capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks correctly, spelling most of the KS1 common exception words, and beginning to use joined-up (cursive) handwriting in many schools.
Maths
Confident addition and subtraction within 100, understanding of multiplication and division through the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, recognising fractions including halves and quarters, and telling time to 5-minute intervals.
How KS1 assessments actually work
Unlike the high-profile KS2 SATs, KS1 assessments have become non-statutory in many schools and are used more as informal teacher-judgement tools, drawing on ongoing classroom evidence rather than one big exam moment. The overall goal is simply to check a child has met the "expected standard" for Key Stage 1 before moving into KS2.
What matters most heading into Year 3
Solid phonics-based reading, comfortable early number facts, and growing writing stamina all matter more at this stage than any single test score โ Year 3 builds directly on all three, and a strong foundation here makes the KS2 jump considerably smoother.
Supporting Year 2 at home
Regular reading of increasingly varied books, everyday practice of the 2/5/10 times tables, and encouraging longer, more detailed writing (even just diary-style sentences about the day) all reinforce exactly what's being built at school.
