Multiplying and dividing numbers up to 4 digits, understanding and comparing fractions, decimals and percentages, calculating area and perimeter of more complex shapes, and confident mental maths across all four operations without needing to write everything down.
Reading
Reading widely across genres and time periods, summarising main ideas from more than one paragraph, and making increasingly sophisticated inferences supported by evidence from the text.
Writing
Selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures deliberately for effect (not just correctness), using a wide range of cohesive devices to link ideas across paragraphs, and increasingly independent editing and improving of their own writing.
Grammar and spelling
The full Year 5/6 statutory spelling list, confident use of relative clauses, and correct use of semicolons, colons and dashes in more sophisticated writing.
Why Year 5 matters so much for SATs preparation
Because Year 6 SATs cover the full KS2 curriculum, not just Year 6 content, gaps from Years 3-5 can genuinely resurface under test conditions. Year 5 is the ideal, lower-pressure time to identify and fill any of these gaps, well before the added stress of the SATs year itself.
