What word problems actually require, beyond calculation
Solving a word problem demands several separate skills at once: reading comprehension (understanding what's actually being asked), identifying which numbers matter and which are irrelevant detail, working out which operation to use, and only then doing the calculation itself. A child can be excellent at the final step and still struggle with everything before it.
Where the breakdown usually happens

Having your child write their own simple word problem for a calculation you give them reinforces the same translation skill from the opposite direction, which often deepens understanding further.
Underline or circle the actual numbers and question
A simple, concrete strategy โ physically marking what matters in the text โ reduces the cognitive load of holding everything in mind at once while also trying to calculate.
