Year 4 maths is where the curriculum properly steps up — times tables to 12, fractions and decimals, negative numbers, and the statutory Multiplication Tables Check looming in June. For a busy parent trying to help after a long day, it can feel like the topics have moved on since you were at school, or that there just isn't time to do it properly.
You don't need to know the method — you need to ask good questions
You don't have to be able to explain long multiplication perfectly to be genuinely useful. Some of the most helpful questions a parent can ask are simple: "Can you show me how you got that?", "Is there another way to check that answer?", "What's the first step here?" These prompt your child to explain their own thinking, which is often more valuable than a parent supplying the method — and it works even if you're genuinely unsure of the "right" way yourself.
Quick wins that take almost no prep
- Real-world maths at the till: "If this is £3.40 and that's £1.20, roughly how much is that together?" — genuine mental maths practice with zero worksheet required.
- Times tables in the car: A few random questions during a short drive — no materials, no sitting down, genuinely five minutes.
- Let them teach you: Ask your child to explain a method they learned at school as if you'd never seen it before. Explaining something out loud is one of the most effective ways to consolidate understanding — and it flips the dynamic from "being tested" to "being the expert."
What Year 4 actually covers, at a glance
Times tables up to 12 x 12 (with the statutory check in June), addition and subtraction with larger numbers, an introduction to negative numbers, fractions including tenths and hundredths, decimals to two places, and area and perimeter of simple shapes. If homework references a method you don't recognise, it's completely fine to say so — "show me how your teacher does it" is a perfectly good way to help, and often more useful than guessing at an unfamiliar method yourself.
When time is genuinely tight
